Neither is aware that this year they are being watched by the scarred, one-eyed Jeremiah SANDS and the coldly-beautiful, golden-haired Lorelei WINTERS, a mysterious pair of benefactors whose interest in these troublesome students may be more malevolent than it first appears. A hand-picked few are chosen to accompany them to The Foundation, where the truth is revealed their world is a place of comic book heroes without the costumes or capes, without the primary colors and the clear lines between good and evil. It is a world of nightmares and fear, a world where no one is safe and truth, justice, and the American way is a secondary consideration after simply surviving another day of teenage life at the institution called the Foundation.

The Foundation will test them both. Rumors abound that it is a place of madness, a school for the dangerously disturbed and the unrepentant delinquents, the gated campus dotted with security cameras and razor-wire. Neither Ashes or Numbers suspect that they've become part of a secret war that has lasted for over a thousand years, a war between those with the blood of something different in their veins and those who would forever hunt them.
